Again and Again

Payton Leoni

Again and Again. This simple phrase speaks volumes of God’s love and his persistence in our lives. In His kindness, he continually draws us back to Himself. Daniel and I reflected on this theme for a while when we wrote AGAIN. We started with a rough instrumental mix, but had no lyrics. Based on the music, we knew we wanted to dedicate this song to the teenagers in our congregation. Daniel and I have worked with the middle/high school musicians on the youth worship team for a number of years collectively, so it was really on both of our hearts to give them their own song to sing, with truth they would need to hear.

With all of this in mind, we reflected for a while on this idea that over and over, throughout the entire Bible, we read of sinful people who forget God’s promises, doubt His presence, and fail to remember His love. I see myself in these stories; in hard times I have often found myself blinded by circumstance, forgetting that God wants me to surrender those things to him each day. I remember telling Daniel that despite my sinful inclination to question God’s goodness, the very moment I doubt, He shows up and proves Himself in a way that only He could explain. And He does it again and again and again.

You probably know where this is going: I had barely said the words when out came the idea for the chorus.
Again and again, You’ve been my Savior.
Again and again, You tell me I’m yours.

In a world that’s increasingly hard to grow up in, it’s this truth that we pray to instill in our younger brothers and sisters in Christ. Now more than ever, teenagers are surrounded by so many things that Satan uses to distract from who God is, and who He says we are. We watch them (and ourselves), lose sight of the Truth time and time again. If you’re a teen reading this, hear us loud and clear: if you claim Christ as your Savior, He will stop at nothing to remind you that He is faithful, present, and true. For those of you reading who have come through adolescence already: let’s be intentional in clinging to this truth too. There is always someone we are looking up to, and always someone looking up to us. May we live in this truth together, as a testimony to each other: Again and again we will doubt, but again and again He will follow through on his promises.
